Lead Designer

Position Summary:

As Lead Designer at Aspyr, you are responsible for the overall design and implementation of narrative, objectives, and encounters in a AAA game. Your range of skills encompasses both the creative and technical worlds, allowing you to successfully arrange and balance between the story, design, and feel of a game that captivates the player into a beloved universe.

Job Description:

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the core Creative Team to drive the creation and refinement of game designs.
  • Coordinate with Design Team members and leadership to help define scope, schedule design tasks and meet milestone demands.
  • Perform ongoing design to iterate on, improve, and build out the game design throughout the development process from early design to post release add-ons.
  • Work with all departments on the scheduling and integration of the game design, as well as game feature development goals and execution.
  • Lead, coordinate and participate in collaborative efforts to implement and balance gameplay features, based on the design.
  • Mentor and lead the design team to grow their skill sets and capabilities.

Required Skills:

  • You’ve shepherded the creative and game design goals for at least one product
  • You can articulate what good design practices look like and train your team on how to follow them
  • You’ve hired dozens of designers in your career and know-how to recruit for excellence, and have experience career-managing designers
  • 7-10+ years of game development experience
  • Deep familiarity with Action and RPG genres on mobile, PC, console, and pen-and-paper platforms

Extra Credit

  • Experience with scripting languages

Combat Designer

As Combat Designer at Aspyr, you are responsible for the design and implementation of combat, objectives, and encounters in a AAA game. Your range of skills encompasses both the creative and technical worlds, allowing you to successfully arrange and balance between the flow, rhythm, and tension of combat, as well as the objectives presented to the players and their associated enemy encounters. If you have experience with creating amazing combat systems, objectives, and encounters, and love the challenge, we’d like to hear from you.

Job Description:

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Design and implement combat, objectives, and encounters in a third-person action game
  • Ensure that narrative context is properly delivered via the missions
  • Work with level designers to ensure spaces can accommodate all required objectives
  • Collaborate with the development team to brainstorm creative ways to implement and showcase the games core mechanics through the level and combat design
  • Collaborate with a cross-discipline narrative team to ensure the local and overarching narrative is being advanced in the levels and missions
  • Assist the Lead Designer in reviewing levels and overall combat design
  • Help drive playtests to gather critical level and feedback from players and develop a plan of action to address issues
  • Work on original and licensed properties, coordinating with teams and licensors to ensure brand consistency and presentation that reflects the licensors needs

Required Skills:

  • At least three years of experience as a designer specifically for combat
  • Shipped at least one AAA Action PC or console title as a designer
  • A thorough grasp of good level design principles (difficulty, risk, and reward, pacing, tension, etc.)
  • Proven ability of supporting narrative through the level and design
  • Ability to use world-building tools such as UnrealEd, Radiant, Max and/or Maya
  • Experience with advanced scripting or coding
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and methodology
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-discipline teams including art, audio, engineering, and narrative
  • Highly self-motivated and able to self-manage
  • Thrives in a highly iterative, highly collaborative environment

Designer, Tech Systems

As Tech System Designer at Aspyr, you are responsible for the design and implementation of systems, objectives, and encounters in a AAA game. If you have experience with creating amazing technical systems, objectives, and encounters, and love the challenge, we’d like to hear from you.

Job Description:

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Promote collaboration amongst designers, programmers and directors.
  • Objectively breakdown system design principles and provide feedback when appropriate.
  • Work with the Lead Designer and Directors to ensure all gameplay systems meet the project’s needs.
  • Employ rapid prototypes and regular onscreen deliverables of all systems from paper to ship.
  • Coordinate closely with AI programmers and LD’s to communicate the goals and specific needs of various combat and gameplay systems and provide regular updates to all related systems.
  • Under minimal supervision, design, adapt and scope features to the needs of production, the technical constraints of the project and the overall gameplay goals. Evaluate and initiate processes and features needed to improve and streamline any gameplay systems related to production.
  • Maintain, test and iterate system-based features from concept phase to final tuning for an award-winning game.
  • Document game mechanics and features quickly, clearly and concisely in a provided specification format to serve as a resource for other designers in the studio to understand the various design concepts and the decisions made that support them.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of game design experience.
  • At least 2 AAA projects shipped for current gen consoles in a systems design capacity.
  • Clear analytical thinker with a proven ability to break gameplay design down into regular, reusable systems and articulate and document them.
  • Understanding of gameplay system constraints as well as an understanding of game engine architecture and custom toolsets.
  • Able to deliver assets within the confines of real-time engine constraints and programming demand.
  • Experience tuning particular game systems required for difficulty, pacing and balance.
  • Ability to conceptualize, present, and execute ideas within a schedule, while actively participating in technical and design problem-solving in engine.
  • Active interest in current industry trends as it relates to game design for RPG games.
  • Ability to work closely with all project disciplines to ensure clear communication, troubleshooting, and efficiency.
  • Excellent knowledge of game design theory and principles of what it takes to make a blockbuster title.

Software Engineer - Mid/Senior Level

Aspyr Media is an Austin TX based developer and publisher of AAA games for PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC, iOS, Android, Mac, and Linux.

We are looking for Software Engineers to expand the team tasked with the development of our AAA game portfolio.

 

We are typically looking for generalist capable engineers who are interested in working on a wide variety of challenges. Middleware, proprietary engines, and amazing games – we get to play with them all.  We have mature technology to assist with this, but as per our roadmap there's also plenty of scope for new talent to shape it.

 

We offer the opportunity to work on amazing games while enjoying a work environment and stability that is far above the norm in the game industry.

 

Requirements:

  • Currency in and an accumulation of actual hands-on game development experience in C++.
  • Systems level development experience.
  • A passion for quality.
  • Generalist – you’ll have worked in at least a couple of different areas of AAA professional game development and have a mix of experience developing various subsystemsAbility to work with large and potentially unfamiliar codebases without running for the hills.

 

Highly Desirable:

  • Familiarity with as much middleware and third-party solutions (incl. open source) as possible.  
  • As mentioned above - we work with it all.
  • Graphics knowledge, especially OpenGL/GLES, Direct3D, HLSL, GLSL, Metal or Vulkan.Console, PC, Mac, iOS or Android experience.
  • Prior experience in other specialist areas (unique skills brought to the table are valued here).

 

Nice to have, but really not at all necessary:

  • Objective-C
  • Unreal Engine 3, 4 or other very popular engine experience.
  • Linux development experience.

Senior and Mid-Level Software Engineers

Position Summary

We currently have openings for both a mid-level and senior software engineer in the Austin area. While the process is fundamentally porting, the technical challenges presented by bringing AAA games to OS X are not that much different than the tasks of a systems engineer doing original development. In addition to porting, Aspyr is developing both original iOS IP and iOS companion apps that integrate with our desktop games.

Desired Skills & Experience

Required Skills:

  • A passion for quality
  • Experience with OS X or iOS.
  • Expert level understanding of C/C++
  • Proven experience with large codebases
  • 4+ years of programming experience in the game industry

Highly Desirable:

  • Experience with console hardware
