Empire at War is one of the slickest RTS games I’ve played. The game is easy to learn and has tons of details that make it a superb Star Wars game. Land battles take place on planets you know as well as some minor planets in the Star Wars universe. Each map is unique, with features such as roving Ewoks and even a Sarlacc that devours nearby troops. AT-Ats stomp across the battlefield, deploying squads of Stormtroopers, only to be brought down by Snowspeeders with grappling hooks.

Space battles are equally impressive. As you defend your space station, you can bring everything from X-Wings to Mon Cal Cruisers into the fray. Bombers and other fighters can target specific hard points to disable
different parts of large ships and space stations. When the Death Star is involved, it looms in the background, possibly destroying the planet while the battle rages overhead.

With the detail of the units, voices and terrain, the Star Wars universe comes to life. Small details such as Obi-Wan and Darth Vader fighting in a unique duel animation give the game its shine. Without the focus on resource gathering that other RTSes have, you’ll be able to concentrate on these details and playing a solid strategic game.
